Google expands cloud infrastructure in the Indian market

Recently, Alphabet executives said that Alphabet’s subsidiary Google is building a second data center cluster in and around the Indian capital New Delhi to meet the growing customer demand in this key market in India.

Located in Delhi and its suburbs, Google Cloud is the second-largest cloud infrastructure in India for the American technology giant and the tenth-largest cloud infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region.

Earlier this week, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said at a press conference before the official announcement of the news: We have seen the huge growth of the Indian market, which is a huge market for Google’s cloud services. There is a strong demand, which prompts us to expand the scale of the cloud area so that we can continue to meet market demand in the future. This is our major commitment to capital and infrastructure investment, and we hope that we can grasp what we see around growth opportunities.

Kurian added that the new infrastructure will help provide solutions to problems such as disaster recovery in India and ensure that many state-owned companies in and around Delhi will not experience high network latency.

Google did not disclose how much it has invested in building new cloud facilities. Bikram Singh Bedi, general manager of Google Cloud India, said that India’s emerging entrepreneurial economy has also promoted and accelerated the use of cloud services. Google Cloud’s Indian customers include local social network ShareChat, online travel company Cleartrip, and private lender HDFC Bank.

In recent years, Google has made big bets in the Indian market. Last year, the company invested US$4.5 billion in the Jio platform from a so-called US$10 billion digital fund targeting India, which is a digital subsidiary of Reliance Industries.

In June of this year, Google said it was establishing a partnership with Jio to help India’s largest wireless operator provide technology solutions for businesses and consumers before the launch of 5G services.
