Honor could also be banned by the US government

Bad news for Honor comes from the United States: the Chinese manufacturer, despite the separation from Huawei, could be included in the list of companies banned by the US government. A group of 14 Republican politicians in the US House of Representatives on Friday asked the US Department of Commerce to add HONOR to the government’s economic blacklist.

We remind you that the inclusion of a company on this list means that it is forbidden to purchase parts and components from US companies or to use American technology without the approval of the US government. As we learn from the South China Morning Post, such politicians say HONOR has been split by Huawei in an attempt to evade U.S. export control policies aimed at keeping U.S. technology and software out of the reach of the Communist Party of China.

In particular, the sale of HONOR by Huawei to a consortium of 30 entities gave the former the possibility of accessing processors, other components and software that the company would otherwise not have been able to reach due to the ban imposed in 2019.

A spokesperson for the US Department of Commerce said the agency appreciates the views of these members of Congress, noting that the department continually reviews available information to identify potential additions to the list of banned companies.

At the moment, neither the Chinese embassy in Washington nor HONOR or Huawei have officially commented on the affair. It remains to be seen whether the Chinese manufacturer is really running the risk of suddenly finding itself unable to exploit the US components for its devices, with the inevitable consequence of having to completely change strategy and resize its growth prospects.
