Samsung announces Galaxy Z Fold 3 release date, price and specifications

The release date and price details of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G were revealed tonight. At the Samsung Unpacked event, the company showed off its latest foldable device with a book hinge. It contains two displays, including the external 6.2-inch standard display and the inner main display, which can be expanded to 7.6 inches.

The front display of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a 6.2-inch HD+ (resolution 2268 x 832px) dynamic AM OLED display (24.5:9 aspect ratio) with 387ppi (pixels per inch) and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The external display has a camera punch hole, and a 10-megapixel, f/2.2, 80-degree FoV camera is installed below.

The internal foldable panel also had perforations or bangs in the past, but starting from the third generation, Samsung has adopted under-screen camera technology. The under-screen camera is 4 MP, has an f/1.8 aperture and a focal length of 80 degrees.

The main display of Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a 7.6-inch QXGA+ dynamic AMOLED 2x display. It is what Samsung calls the Infinity Flex display, with 2208 x 1768 pixels (374ppi) and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. This panel has a new protective film, which is more flexible than in the past, but as in the past, if the user needs to replace it, he still needs the assistance of Samsung’s official service.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 has a set of three cameras on the back, each of which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass DX. The three cameras are all 12 million pixels, but each camera has its own purpose. The parameters of the ultra-wide-angle camera are F/2.2 aperture and 123-degree focal length.

The working range of the wide-angle camera is 83 degrees, F/1.8, OIS, And dual pixel autofocus. The telephoto camera is equipped with PDAF, F/2.4, OIS, 45-degree focal length, dual OIS, HDR10+ recording and tracking autofocus. This telephoto camera supports 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom. The camera array on the back also provides an LED flash.

These cameras are actually exactly the same as the camera array (rear array) of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. The improvements in camera power between devices are all based on software. In terms of software, some functions will be launched together with Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, but it seems that the above functions are not exclusive. Over time, all software functions on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will almost certainly be available to the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

How is it different from Fold 2?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 has IPX8 waterproof performance, a lighter and thinner body, and a new protective film is installed on its foldable display. Samsung said that with this protective film, it will be up to 80% more durable than past foldable devices. The exterior panel of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 uses Gorilla Glass, and the entire body uses a new material called armor aluminum. Samsung claims that this aluminum is 10% stronger than past foldable devices.

The Z Fold 2 weighs 282 grams and the thickest part is 6.9 mm, while the newly released Galaxy Z Fold 3 weighs 271 grams and the thickest part is 6.4 mm. Unlike the previous generation, Galaxy Z Fold 3 uses a camera under the display. This camera has artificial intelligence image processing. Although the image is taken through the display panel, the final media shooting effect is still very good.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 supports S Pen. Users need to buy separately on Fold 3, and the stylus is not plugged into the device like Galaxy Note, but Samsung provides a set of official S Pen-holster for Galaxy Z Fold 3, and two different S Pen can select. One is called S Pen Pro-this is a Galaxy universal stylus, compatible with different Galaxy devices (all models that support S Pen).

There is also the S Pen Fold Edition, which has no Bluetooth and is slightly shorter, and is only used for Fold 3. S Pen Pro is compatible with Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G, Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+, and Galaxy Book Pro 360.
