The activation of Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series requires a smartphone that supports GMS

Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic are the first smartwatches to run on Google’s new Wear OS 3 platform, which was jointly developed with South Korean technology giants. Interestingly, Samsung requires smartphones that support Google Mobile Services (GMS) to activate the new watch, which means that no Apple iOS or Huawei devices can be used with the Watch 4 series.

Watch 4 official specification page on the Samsung website further lists the smartphone pairing requirements that must be built Android 6.0 and above system, and equipped than 1.5GB of memory. Samsung further confirmed to the media that its Watch4 series will not be compatible with iOS devices. The Galaxy watches sold before will still be compatible with Android and iOS devices, but it remains to be seen whether other brands of Wear OS 3 smartwatches will have the same pairing requirements as the Watch 4 series.
