Samsung announces SmartThings Edge for a safer and more reliable smart home

Samsung has announced SmartThings Edge, a new architecture that allows core functionality to run locally for greater reliability, speed and security. Although users will not see any kind of change regarding the SmartThings app interface which, we recall, allows you to control compatible accessories and appliances, SmartThings Edge will clearly transform both connectivity and user experience.

The technology used by SmartThings Edge, in fact, is able to increase the speed of automation by eliminating the need for cloud-based processing, bringing all information directly to the Hub. This change not only simplifies events and commands but also allows support for local devices on a home network as well as the ability to run automation, always locally.

This support also reduces latency and increases reliability. SmartThings users will also be able to connect Zigbee, Z-Wave and LAN-based integrations, with the ability to connect more protocols in the future, including Matter, an open-source smart home platform also supported by Amazon, Apple and Google.

This evolution is part of the evolution that Samsung has thought for SmartThings in order to modernize it and detach it from the more obsolete Groovy platform. Developers will now be able to code and create drivers via Lua giving manufacturers a greater possibility of integration with the platform.
