T-Mobile sold for 5.1 billion euros, you need to know about it

The Dutch branch of T-Mobile is getting a new home with the investment funds Apax and Warburg Pincus thanks to an acquisition worth 5.1 billion euros. T-Mobile and the brands Tele 2, Simpel and Ben will continue to exist.

T-Mobile Netherlands is getting a new owner because the parent company Deutsche Telekom and Tele 2 have sold the provider to two investment companies: one British and one American. It concerns Apax and Warburg Pincus respectively, who have 5.1 billion euros for T-Mobile Netherlands, the provider says in a press release.

Both investors already have experience with the international telecom market and they aim to grow T-Mobile in the Netherlands, but all brands of the provider – Tele 2, Simpel and Ben – will certainly be retained. The acquisition will have no impact on the services of the brands.

However, there is definitely something to change, because Apax and Warburg Pincus want to push T-Mobile faster towards a fiber-optic network. T-Mobile has experienced a delay in that area compared to the fixed networks of competitors.

The brand will continue to work with Open Dutch Fiber to provide 1 million households with faster internet over the next five years. Although there is a chance that T-Mobile will now shift up a gear and also join forces with Delta Fiber. This company is known for installing fiber optics at a rapid pace.

T-Mobile has been in the shop window since the beginning of this year and there were other interested parties, including the Indian Reliance Industries. In principle, the Dutch government can still stop the deal thanks to a new law. This is only possible if T-Mobile puts the service at risk.
