Edge 93 adds a picture-in-picture control button in the video frame

Previously, you needed to manually or use Global Media Controls to enable the picture-in-picture mode in the Microsoft Edge browser. However, it is no longer needed today. In the Edge 93 version for Windows and macOS, the picture-in-picture control button will appear in the video box.

The picture-in-picture mode allows watching videos in a floating window above other windows. Through the picture-in-picture mode, you can interact with other websites or applications. The Chrome browser does not have a native picture-in-picture button.

Users need to right-click on the video and select the option to enter the picture-in-picture mode. However, they can manage the audio and video playback in the browser by opening the media control user interface in the toolbar.

For example, Chromium-based browsers such as Vivaldi and Opera can customize the picture-in-picture mode according to your preferences. Now, Microsoft is the Windows launch PIP button and macOS end of Edge browser. The button looks close to the Firefox version.

Way of working:

  • Visit YouTube
  • Play any video
  • Hover your mouse over it and notice a pop-up button (this button looks similar to the buttons in Opera and Vivaldi browsers), click it and it will open the video in a picture-in-picture window.

Enabling and disabling the picture-in-picture button

  • Access settings>Cookies and website permissions>Picture-in-picture control
  • Select to enable Picture-in-picture control displayed in the video frame

If you want to enter the picture-in-picture mode for the video in Edge from the global media control, please follow the steps below.

  • Enable the following flags and restart the browser.
  1. Global Media Controls
  2. Global Media Controls Picture-in-Picture
