Google Chrome cleaning up the underutilized tab stacking feature

With the arrival of Tab Groups and Scrollable Tabs, the Stacked Tabs in the Chrome browser will soon be disabled by Google. This change will be reflected in the Chrome 96 Canary development branch first. At first, this feature appeared after a flag (flags) in 2013, but the related code after the flag disappeared for many years has not been cleaned up for many years.

To this day, the Stacked Tabs function is still available in the Chrome browser. The activation method is as follows:

  • Right-click the Chrome shortcut and select properties;
  • Add –force-stacked-tab-strip-layout at the end of the Target field and “apply” to take effect.

Now, when you try to open a large number of tabs, the tab bar will not shrink. They will not be stacked together until there is not enough display space. Unfortunately, due to the low usage rate, Google has decided to completely remove it from the Chrome browser code and claims that it constitutes a major obstacle to the development of alternative functions.

According to the plan, the Chromium kernel development team will mark Stacked Tabs with CL disabled first, and then disappear along with other code changes. On Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS platforms, you will see the mark Prevent the tab bar from entering stack mode enabled-unless you choose to manually enable it through the methods mentioned above.

  • Start Chrome;
  • Search Stacked Tabs;
  • Move to the drop-down menu of “Force Disable Stacked Tabs”;
  • Select “Enable” and restart the browser.
