Pixel 6 Pro rated by DxOMark: score not at the top, but the test is debatable

Pixel 6 Pro passed into the DxOMark laboratories for the classic evaluation test of the photographic sector, from which results emerged that place the new top of the Google range on a very high level, but certainly not at the top.

The score assigned by DxOMark is in fact equal to 135, a value that contains within it three other scores dedicated to photos (143), zoom (71) and videos (115). To give an idea of the positioning in the DxOMark ranking, the current leader is still the Huawei P50 Pro with 144 points, followed by Xiaomi 11 Ultra at 143 and Huawei Mate 40 Pro + at 139 points. In front of the Pixel 6 Pro, we also find both the top-of-the-range iPhones 2021, or 13 Pro and Pro Max, which share the same result of 137 points, considering that the photographic sector is the same.

The expectations towards the Pixel 6 Pro were undoubtedly higher, considering that we are talking about the latest representative of a series of smartphones known for its undoubted photographic qualities, thanks to the work done by Google on the software front. All the previous Pixels have always offered excellent results even in the face of an outdated main sensor and therefore it was logical to expect sparks from Pixel 6 Pro, considering the major renewal that took place this year also on the hardware front.

Instead, it seems that the work done by Google is not yet finished and that – as also highlighted in our preview -, there is still ample room for improvement that will allow the Pixel 6 Pro to express its potential only after further updates. It is therefore established that the smartphone is not yet at its full potential, however, it should be noted that the ways in which DxOMark performed its evaluation are raising more than a few perplexities.

The most striking case concerns the evaluation of photos at night, where the shots of Pixel 6 Pro are compared with those of iPhone 13 Pro Max and P50 Pro. The site claims to have used the same settings on all 3 smartphones, including the option to start the flash in automatic mode. Here is the result:

As you can easily see, the Pixel 6 Pro shot was heavily penalized precisely due to the fact that the flash was activated during shooting, thus going to expose only the subject at the expense of the background. This cost the top of the range Google dearly, which scored only 67 points in the Night category (iPhone and P50 both have 72) without being able to be evaluated to its full potential.

But this is not the only aspect of the evaluation that has left perplexing, it is also the score assigned to the zoom, where the Pixel is positioned under the iPhone 13 Pro Max (it scores 93 points against 97) net of a shot that actually does not seem to favor. in no way is the top of the range from Apple. You have the opportunity to judge:

In short, Pixel 6 Pro has received an evaluation that – shots in hand – does not seem to be very consistent with the actual qualities of the smartphone (and the problems highlighted are not the only ones), which is why the score assigned by DxOMark is not particularly reliable.
