Google with ‘Look to Speak’ shows us how great technology can be

It’s called Look to Speak and it is an application created by the Google developer team to help some people with disabilities to communicate with others and which finally arrives in our country thanks to the introduction of support for the Italian language. This is an experimental Android app that allows people to use their eyes to select pre-written phrases and make them speak out loud.

Its operation is quite simple, as the system designed by the Mountain View giant uses the front camera of the smartphone to identify the user’s eyes and perceive their movement, in order to transform it into the corresponding action. And so, thanks to the Look to Speak app, even those who cannot move due to a serious pathology have the opportunity to interact with the smartphone through their eyes.

How Google’s Look to Speak app works

Look to Speak includes various phrases that the user can make the smartphone repeat aloud, divided into groups among which you can navigate using your own eyes. To navigate between the various options available, you need to keep your gaze fixed on your smartphone and look to the right, left or up, while to select simply look away from the screen.

The following is the video with which the Google team about a year ago presented this experimental project, providing a concrete demonstration of its potential and how it could improve the lives of those suffering from serious speech diseases. and movement:

The hope is that the Mountain View giant will be able to take further steps in this direction, providing users with increasingly effective tools. After all, one of the first objectives of technology should be precisely to improve and simplify everyday activities.
