Google renews Wear OS ‘System Updates’ screen

2021 was the year of a new beginning for Wear OS: the rapprochement between Google and Samsung produced the desired results, so much so that, thanks to the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series, the Big G operating system finally seemed a worthy competitor from Apple.

In the second half of next year, several Wear OS smartwatches (here is our guide to the best ones, with and without Google operating system ) already on the market will be updated to version 3 of the operating system based on Android 11 – for those who don’t know, these smartwatches have an operating system version (to be searched under “Wear OS” or “Android OS”) and a system version – but in the meantime, Google has released a new “ System Updates ” screen for Wear OS.

Currently, many updates go through Google Play Store apps or Google Play Services, but with version 21.42.18 a new UI for system updates is introduced (Settings> System> About). The previous UI with a blue check and the words System is up to date gives way to a new screen: at the top, there is a small icon in the shape of a clock, followed by the words Your watch is up to date; the substance is the same, but there is also more information, namely the version of Android installed (Android version) and that of the security patches (Android security update).

This new approach is certainly clearer and less confusing than the current one described above. Since this small novelty already seems quite widespread, it seems that the Mountain View house is laying the foundations for the release of Wear OS 3 based on Android 11 in 2022.
