Valve updates Proton and brings DLSS to Linux

Valve’s work to make Linux a Gaming platform like Windows knows no pauses. After the announcement of Steam Deck, Valve’s future console will in fact be equipped with a new version of the SteamOS operating system, based on Arch Linux.

In the past Valve had already tried to make its own console, it was the Steam Machines which, however, due to the limited stock of titles and the decidedly not very mature software, offered a generally disappointing gaming experience, had very little success.

Valve has learned from its mistakes and, after abandoning Debian and based SteamOS on Arch Linux, has identified the lack of interest on the part of the software-houses in its operating system as the cause of the Steam Machines failure. Valve’s solution to this problem is Proton.

Proton is a fork of Wine created by Valve in collaboration with Codeweavers, which aims to make games made for Windows also run on Linux and does so by operating as a sort of translator. Proton allows software houses to develop for Windows only, letting Proton do all the conversion work.

Valve has just presented the stable version 6.3-8 of Proton, which brings users two big news: support for BattlEye anti-cheat technologies and above all, for the first time in Linux, the proprietary Nvidia DLSS technology.

Steam users on Linux with Nvidia RTX graphics cards can now enjoy all the visual quality and performance benefits that DLSS has always offered on Windows. To do this, they just have to insert in the game launch options the string PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI = 1 dxgi.nvapiHack = False
