ChromeOS 96 released with improving the camera feature and more

After moving to a four-week update cycle, Google just skipped Chrome OS 95 and released the Chrome OS 96 version directly. On the other hand, the company has six months of long-term support (LTS) channels for education and corporate Chromebook customers.

In terms of functions, Chrome OS 96 particularly emphasizes the improvement of the camera experience. Chrome OS devices equipped with front and rear cameras can now convert captured content into PDF or JPEG format through the document scanner function built into the camera application.

Next to the QR code, you will see the newly added Scan tab. After enabling, the camera application will automatically detect the edge, of course, the user can also manually adjust. If you have used Chrome OS 94 before, you may not be unfamiliar with this update.

At the same time, users of Chrome OS devices using compatible external cameras can now use Pan-Tilt-Zoom to control the angle and crop. The new D-pad (located in the left column) of the camera application for adjustment has also been used in various use cases.

Looking forward to next year, the Chrome OS camera application will also usher in a GIF production tool, so that users can easily record up to 5 seconds of clips. In addition, Google is also testing the integration of photographs, video recording and selfie functions for virtual assistants.

As for the long-awaited Nearby Share feature for Chrome OS users, it can now also be accessed in the Android application and its share list. Previously, this function was limited to file applications, progressive web applications (PWA), and system applications. In other respects, Chrome OS96 introduced a new notification page in Settings → Applications (previously only available in quick settings) for users to turn it on or off.

Similarly, for Apps in the Application Management list, a new Open Supported Links section has been added to help users determine whether the web address (URL) opens the installed client or displays it in the Chrome browser. Finally, the wallpaper application has recently ushered in larger design changes, the introduction of a larger grid UI, and can be accessed through the launcher icon (instead of just clicking the right mouse button on the desktop).
