Signal launches in-app anonymous donation feature, inactive accounts will not be continuously deducted

Signal, a messaging app that focuses on privacy and security, has just announced a new feature that allows users to provide donations in the app. A blog post pointed out that as a non-profit organization, Signal does not receive financial support from any advertisers or shareholders, but considers accepting anonymous donations from users.

Users can choose to use Apple Pay/Google Pay to initiate monthly or one-time donations within the app, and the payment information will not be associated with the user account. It is reported that Signal has set up the same anonymous authentication scheme for the donation process as private groups.

To donate to Signal, users can voluntarily choose $5, $10, or $20, and each level has different badges. After payment, the system will associate the user’s personal data with a badge, so that the server can verify whether the customer is in the set of payers, instead of directly corresponding to which payment.

As for the monthly payment, Signal also gave a fairly reasonable policy.

  • Only when the user uses the software in a certain month will he be renewed by the system.
  • If the user no longer uses or uninstalls the Signal application, the scheduled donation will also be cancelled before the next cycle, so it will not become the user’s financial black hole.

Finally, Signal plans to add support for more payment methods in the future.
