The new 14/16-inch MacBook Pro has SD card slot problem

According to reports, the SD card reader slot of the new 14/16-inch MacBook Pro model fails to meet expectations on some SD cards. On the subject of a long complaint, users reported multiple SD card problems: including some SD cards that were inaccessible due to a crash, some were abnormally slow in transmission speed, and so on.

MacRumors reader Wildct explained the problem:

The 14-inch M1 Pro has the same problem. It just seems super unstable and inconsistent. Half the time it can successfully recognize the card (although it takes 30 seconds to 1 second), half the time it will make an error. These are Sandisk Ultra cards, including XC and HC, which are formatted in my camera. I tried reformatting them with MBP, but it didn’t seem to make a difference. All my cards work normally in the other three USB card readers.

In some cases, when trying to use the SD card, there is only an error message, sometimes the Finder crashes, and sometimes the SD card takes many minutes to be accessed. MacRumors reader 2Stepfan wrote:

This is very frustrating. I hope that on my new 14-inch MBP, importing from SD card including preview images will be fast. I have a fairly new 64GB SD card and it has been working very well. But using the “photo” of the internal SD card slot on the MBP takes a few minutes to display the photo, and sometimes it crashes in the middle. Sometimes the Finder will crash.

Although formatting may help improve this problem, it is not the decisive factor. There does not seem to be a common clue between which cards can be used and which cards cannot be used, but multiple users have reported that when the SD card slot cannot be used normally, the SD card reader is connected through the USB-C port, It can be used normally.

From reader wilberforce of MacRumors:

I tried a lot of cards, but couldn’t find the model or brand, size, type, format, age. It seems to be completely random. The only thing that is consistent is that if a card works, it will always work, and if a card does not work, it will never work. Reformatting, even in all other possible formats, does not make any difference. Sandisk, Sony, Samsung, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, UHS-I, UHS-II, micro-SD, FAT32, exFAT, there is no difference. 100% of my card can work perfectly through the card reader.

Some readers who contacted Apple were told that the company is aware of this problem and will fix it in a future software update, but it is still unclear whether this is a hardware problem or a software problem. Some users who had problems replaced their MacBook Pros and did not continue to have problems, so I don’t know what the problem might be.
