God of War becomes a retro turn-based RPG – impressive, right?

In 2018, Santa Monica decided to change the God of War formula. The game differs greatly from those we have come to know on PS2, PSP and PS3, so much so that Kratos’ new adventure has essentially become a sort of reboot, at least as regards the gameplay. Today, however, a video from a collective of digital artists shows us how the title with Kratos and Atreus could become a turn-based RPG for the first PlayStation.

64 Bits (this is the name of the YouTube channel behind the project) has a very simple goal: to imagine modern games in PlayStation 1 versions, with small changes to the gameplay. Their latest work takes the original God of War and transforms it into a turn-based RPG, using the Breath of Fire 4 template. A minute and a half proof of concept, obviously not playable, showing us what it would look like. had the work of Santa Monica in 1998 with a game design very similar to that of the J-RPG.

Despite being a fan-made project, the God of War demake also got the attention of Cory Barlog, director of the 2018 game. Barlog showed his appreciation on Twitter, leaving a comment on the post that did 64 Bits which reads “I love this thing!”, Complete with a heart emoji and a mug of beer. Barlog obviously appreciated, but we all know how difficult (if not impossible) it will be to see a Kratos and Atreus game in this style in the near future.

The new cycle of Kratos began in 2018 and God of War Ragnarok, scheduled for 2022, should conclude the Norse parenthesis of the PlayStation icon that we have come to love over the course of these generations of Sony consoles. The future, however, at least in our opinion, is still to be written and the possibility that the development team decides over the next few years to bring the franchise back to life with a new setting cannot be ruled out.
