Will Minecraft be the perfect metaverse? Phil Spencer believes it, but with doubts

With many companies opening up to the concept of the metaverse, there are already many online platforms that have debuted in what appears to be in effect a new field for the entertainment sector. Obviously, many of the videogame giants have also expressed curiosity towards the metaverse, and specifically, Phil Spencer of Microsoft talked about the relationship of the American company with this novelty and its sandbox par excellence Minecraft.

The head of the Xbox division had his say on the metaverse issue in a recent interview with the editorial staff of protocol, where he added his thoughts on this new way of creating entertainment to the infinite universe made of cubes. Minecraft is an open creation tool, where people can create everything, share creations through our marketplace and sell them to other members of the community.

We leaders are spending a lot of time together and talking about the knowledge we have and how we could put the foundation together, Spencer said on the metaverse. But I wonder why Microsoft? Why is this metaverse, which many people are focusing on, good for gamers? Why is it good for creators? I think it’s easy for a lot of tech companies to say that the metaverse could be good for their company. But we have just learned that if we put the players at the center we have to try to build an ecosystem that works around their needs and their needs, in that way the platform will take off.

What emerges from this chat is that, potentially, Microsoft already has a powerful ally in Minecraft on which to build a strong metaverse foundation. Phil Spencer, for his part, seems to recognize the potential of this new way of interacting, but to date, it seems that Microsoft is focused on providing first of all an experience that revolves around the player rather than companies.
