Microsoft is developing new Mica visual effects for Windows 11

Citing a report from the technology media Windows Latest, Microsoft is planning to develop and test Tabbed Mica special effects on Windows 11. In the SDK of Windows 11 Build 22523, there is a new Tabbed design public API. This was first discovered by Start Is All Back. When switching between Acrylic, Mica and Tabbed, you can see the design changes.

In light mode, switching to the Tabbed option will activate the Mica-like glass effect, and there will be a severely blurred wallpaper. Microsoft also provides an experiential sample application that shows the impact that these APIs may have on a real application. We’ve included these for you below, although we think it’s more obvious when switching to dark mode.

This appearance is quite interesting. It seems a lot like Mica, but not translucent. But it may not be the only change in Windows 11. According to Windows Latest, Microsoft may be willing to bring Mica effects to more modern and traditional applications. This can obviously be seen from the “MicaBackdropInApplicationFrameHostTitlebar” logo in the latest Windows Insider build.
