Apple’s first foldable mobile phone is expected to be launched in 2024. The technology media AppleInsider has produced high-definition renderings based on the clues currently available to show its possible appearance. Rumors and patents show that Apple has been studying the design of the foldable iPhone for many years. However, the technology required for this device is still in its infancy, and it is unclear what form the device might take.
There are many rumors about aircraft every year. In September 2021, well-known analyst Guo Mingchi said that it may not arrive until 2024. Unlike Apple, Samsung has been developing its folding technology publicly, launching the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Apple is testing these two form factors for its first foldable phone but may prefer a design that folds up and down.
The patent shows that Apple hopes to overcome these problems through the complex hinge and display technology. As iPhone 14 may introduce a complete redesign in 2022, the rendering of iPhone Fold adopts these new elements. The flat sides combined with the punch-hole selfie camera and flush rear camera module form the basic elements of this device.
We hope that Apple’s foldable display will not have creases or gaps when it is opened and closed. When fully closed, the thickness of the device should be only slightly thicker than the current iPhone and should be similar in size to the iPad mini when opened. It is unclear how Apple will optimize iOS or iPadOS for foldable devices. If the display can only work in a fully open state, there may not be much change. Apple may allow games or chat applications to adopt a three-quarter open or semi-open model.
Some foldable Android devices have multiple operating positions and even an external display for use when the main display is closed. However, it is unclear whether Apple will adopt these more complex form factors. For Apple’s first foldable product, it is expected that it will be an iPhone that can be easily folded and opened. In addition, Apple may not want to spoil this experience with experimental features or hardware additions.
