Apple makes its own 5G modem chips and will put 120,000 TSMC chips into production in 2023

According to the latest report, Apple is establishing a closer partnership with TSMC, hoping to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm, and plans to let TSMC produce iPhone 5G basebands from 2023.

Recently, the Liberty Times reported that the supply chain said that Apple’s technology has been developed and will use TSMC’s 5nm family process, with an annual production capacity of 120,000 pieces, contributing to TSMC’s 2023 operational growth momentum.

Qualcomm CFO Akash Palkhiwala previously said that Apple is expected to use only 20% of Qualcomm 5G modems in iPhone models shipped in 2023, suggesting that Apple will soon mass-produce self-developed basebands chips.

In May 2021, Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple’s own 5G baseband chip may debut in the 2023 iPhone model. TSMC will hold a legal meeting on January 13 to announce its 2021 financial report and follow-up plans but did not respond to the supply chain rumors.
