Canada investigates heat pump failure in Tesla Model 3 and Model Y

Canada’s auto safety watchdog said on Thursday that it has launched an investigation into a problem with heating systems in Tesla vehicles failing in extremely cold weather, after receiving 16 complaints about the problem with Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y. Transport Canada said it was concerned that if a Tesla vehicle’s heating and air conditioning system were to fail, it could affect windshield defogging/defrosting, which could affect driver visibility.

When a company discovers a defect that could affect personal safety, it must notify Transport Canada and all existing vehicle owners. These notifications are often referred to as safety recalls, the department said.

In 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted: The Model Y heat pump is one of the best projects I’ve seen in a while.

But multiple Tesla owners have complained that the heat pumps fail in extremely low temperatures. At the beginning of last year, Tesla replaced the heat pump sensor of the 2020-2021 Model 3 and Model Y to solve this problem.
