New data shows why Apple should ditch the iPhone mini model

Apple has dominated iPhone sales in China since the iPhone 13 debuted, but unsurprisingly, the mini is the worst performer even in this market. New data shared by Counterpoint shows that by 2021, the iPhone 13 will surpass the iPhone 13 Pro Max as the best-selling model in China.

According to these figures, more than 1 in every 2 iPhones sold in China last year were iPhone 13s. The iPhone 13 Pro was third on the list with 21 percent, while the iPhone 13 mini had the least appeal, capturing only 5 percent of all iPhone sales.

Initial sales of the iPhone 13 series in China surpassed sales of previous generations. With the release of the iPhone 13, Apple took the No. 1 position in sales in China, maintaining the No. 1 position except for a brief period during Singles’ Day. No. 1 position, Counterpoint pointed out, this success has also been accompanied by a strong performance of the iPhone 12, which has contributed to the growth of Apple’s overall sales.

In addition to confirming that the iPhone 13 was a hugely successful product, these figures also suggest that Apple was right in doing away with the iPhone mini. The upcoming iPhone 14 generation will no longer include a 5.4-inch form factor, and Apple will introduce a larger iPhone 14 Pro — with a 6.7-inch display. As such, the lineup will consist of four different models, just like the current generation, though this time it will also include 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch devices.

The iPhone Mini will be retired, and the smallest iPhone Apple offers will be the iPhone SE, which will get an update sometime this spring. The unveiling of the iPhone 14 is expected to take place in September, as happens every year.
