Xiaomi raises the bar of security with MIUI Pure Mode

Last September Xiaomi started looking for users willing to become testers for MIUI Pure Mode, a feature designed to guarantee a higher level of protection from potentially harmful applications. Xiaomi in recent months has not provided details on the status of the work but, apparently, they have gone ahead, so much so that in the past few hours an MIUI user in China has noticed that the manufacturer has implemented the Pure Mode functionality.

How MIUI Pure Mode works

In practice, MIUI Pure Mode has been designed to allow users to rely on a tool that prevents them from downloading malicious applications, i.e. a solution that resembles what is called Security Check-in OPPO, Realme and OnePlus smartphones.

However, there is an important difference between these two systems: Security Check scans the app after its installation while MIUI Pure Mode the installation takes place only after a check is carried out in the background.

There are 4 main features of MIUI Pure Mode:

  • Detection of viruses, Trojans, or malware hidden in the app
  • Notably of the possible collection of user data without the necessary authorizations
  • Checking the compatibility of the app with the smartphone to prevent crashes or various problems
  • Authorized apps are manually checked, installed and tested by real users to confirm compatibility and security

To enable MIUI Pure Mode it is possible to enter the Xiaomi interface installer app and, in the upper right corner, select settings and then proceed to its activation. Users can also when installing an application not yet controlled by Safe Mode select the option to activate Pure Mode, in order to initiate a safety check.

After activating Pure Mode, apps that have not been manually reviewed by Xiaomi will undergo manual security tests to ensure they meet the necessary requirements while the others will not be installed (unless users decide to manually authorize them).
