Regular Google users still don’t get live translations in Google Meet

While Google is making Google Meet more convenient for international teams made up of people who don’t share the same native language. But unfortunately, the average consumer is left out.

  • Google Meet is now offering live translations to more users.
  • Translations from English to German are also supported.
  • Unfortunately, normal Google users cannot use the function.

It’s been over a year since I first blogged about this incredibly handy and somewhat sci-fi feature here on the blog: live translations in Google Meet. The beta phase did not end with the year, but Google is now reporting on the general availability of the function.

Translated subtitles help make Google Meet video meetings more inclusive and collaborative by eliminating language barriers. When meeting attendees consume content in their preferred language, it helps keep information sharing, learning, and collaborating on an equal footing, ensuring your meetings are as effective as possible for everyone.

This feature is particularly useful for all-hands meetings or training sessions with globally distributed teams. Additionally, translated subtitles can be of great use in education, allowing educators to connect and interact with students, parents, and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.

More users of different Google Workspace suites should be able to understand their counterparts better – especially if they do not speak a common language. First of all, however, it is about the translation from English into German, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

These Google Workspace packages can use live translation in Google Meet

Google lists the various packages that unlock translations for Google Meet, including Google Workspace Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus customers, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Google Workspace for Education Plus. Stupid for most: Unfortunately, individual Google Workspace customers or users of normal Google accounts cannot use it. Unfortunately, it is not known whether this will ever change.
