Piers Harding-Rolls, director of analytics firm Ampere Analysis, was recently asked how consumer demand in the console industry will evolve this year, especially given the chip shortage. Harding-Rolls sees Sony selling 18 million PS5s in 2022, compared to 9 million for the Xbox Series. The most are the Nintendo Switch, which can reach 21 million sales this year.
A chart shared by Ampere Analysis shows that in both 2020 and 2021, the PS5 will outsell the Xbox. So the company expects that the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will sell at least 9 million units this year, while the PS5 will sell 18 million, double that.

It’s only January, however, and any major announcement from the three major console makers could have unintended consequences. Microsoft recently announced the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Once the latter’s games enter Game Pass, then Xbox hardware sales will be greatly improved.
But the premise is that Microsoft can complete the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and the time is until 2023. It is worth mentioning that Sony is also said to be working on its own Game Pass service to replace PS Plus and PS Now.
