In the future, AirPods may be able to authenticate users by the shape of the ear canal

Apple has previously been rumored to include in-display Touch ID and Face ID on future iPhone models. It’s possible, however, that Apple forgoes both options and devises an entirely new authentication method. A recently filed Apple patent hints at the use of AirPods for authentication.

Apple’s new patent is titled User Identification Using Headphones and was filed with the US Patent Office. The patent explains how the system uses AirPods to authenticate users using nearby devices, ultrasonic signals, voice recognition, and more. The patent also describes a potential security risk for the wireless headset — since anyone could wear it to get information.

The patent explains the use of ultrasonic signals, which will act as a sonar to detect the shape of the ear canal. In addition, AirPods can also use the exercise data of iPhone and Apple Watch. This will enable the system to learn the user’s walking pattern, gait, to confirm their identity. Various features such as the user’s ear provide echoes of the ultrasonic signal that are unique to the user.

Changes in the surface of a user’s ear canal can cause ultrasonic signals to reflect off the surface and produce echoes with user-relevant characteristics. However, it is worth noting that this is only a patent at this stage, and the final decision rests with Apple. Also, there’s no word on whether the company will announce AirPods with a user authentication system anytime soon.
