Twitter expands test of Tweet downvote button globally

Twitter is expanding globally with the test of a new “dislike” or thumbs down button for tweets, which is designed to let people downvote replies on the social media platform. The company announced on Thursday that it was expanding testing globally, and said it had “learned a lot” about the drop-down voting option in its initial limited testing.

We’ve learned a lot about the types of replies you don’t think are relevant, and we’re expanding the test — you and more people on the web, including iOS and Android, will also have the option to use reply downgrades.

Twitter said early testing showed that most users clicked down for a response they thought was offensive, irrelevant or both. Twitter also said that those who tested the feature agreed that “it improves the quality of conversations on Twitter.”

It’s worth noting that the dislike button is only visible to people viewing the tweet, it doesn’t expose ranking algorithm metrics, and it’s not visible to the tweet author, but is just an internal tool designed to help Twitter understand what people think is valuable to the conversation content.
