Samsung Display attempts to import Korean-made OLED Metal Masks to break Japan’s Monopoly

According to the latest report, Samsung Display may purchase from South Korea’s Poongwon Precision Company, a key material for the production of OLED panels – fine metal mask (FMM).

According to the media analysis, if Poongwon’s FMM is successfully imported into the panel giant, it may shake the monopoly position of the Japanese company, Dai Nippon Printing, in the field of FMM.

Sources analyzed that Poongwon Precision will need to provide the same quality FMM at a cheaper price than Dainippon Printing. Samsung Display has confirmed that Poongwon Precision will supply Fine Metal Mask (FMM) panels for the 6th generation (1500x1850mm) Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED).

Earlier this month, ahead of its initial public offering (IPO), Poongwon Precision announced it would deliver the first batch of FMMs without disclosing its customers.

FMM is a mask used in the OLED deposition process. DNP, which has a de facto monopoly in the global FMM market, also exclusively supplies FMM to Samsung Display. Although Japan’s Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. and Chinese companies can also achieve FMM, DNP firmly occupies the absolute right to speak in this market.

If Poongwon Precision successfully mass-produces FMM for Samsung Display, it can realize the substitution of key OLED components and break the DNP monopoly.
