There may soon be ads in Windows 11 File Explorer

One of the biggest pitfalls people have with Windows 10 is “ads,”, especially in certain parts of the system’s user interface, where ads and recommendations pop up sporadically. Depending on how you look at it, these are actually suggestions from Microsoft to try out their other apps and services.

This was recently discovered by Windows Insider MVP Florian B, who mentioned that some people might be “going crazy” about it. As shown above, Florian’s tweet shows that File Explorer has a drop-down suggestion to try Microsoft Editor.

The “Advertisement” and information are displayed under the navigation bar and there is an option to “Learn more” or to close the information itself. This latest change shows up in the Windows Insider Dev Channel build, 22572.100.

Florian isn’t alone, as another Twitter user experienced the same messaging. The Windows 11 user noticed a message in File Explorer advising users to go to the Office website and browse for PowerPoint templates. In the dev pipeline, as people know, this could be an A/B test to see how people react before Microsoft rolls out the change to more people. Of course, it’s also unlikely to be the final version of Windows 11’s upcoming update, as Dev Channel features come and go all the time.
