Android: New Google app Pixel Camera Services will be rolled out for Pixel 6, feature drop is imminent

With the latest Pixel Feature Drop, Google has again announced a whole bunch of new features for the Pixel smartphones, which should have arrived with many users by now. However, users of the Pixel 6 smartphones still have to be patient, but probably not for long. An update for the new Pixel Camera Services app now enables night vision functionality for external apps.

The Pixel Feature Drop brings many innovations with it every quarter, although not all of them are offered for all smartphones in the first step. A Pixel 6-exclusive innovation is that the camera’s night vision function can be used within Snapchat and other apps in the future. However, with the previous blemish that the drop feature has not yet been activated for the Pixel 6 smartphones. But that should change in the next few days.

Now there has been an update for the new Pixel Camera Services app, a Pixel-exclusive app listed in the Play Store that is responsible for the interaction between the camera and other apps. The exact internal task area is not known, but it should be a framework that can be used by app developers in the future. An important feature is night vision, which is only available exclusively for Snapchat for the time being. This exclusivity is expected to last only three months.

After the update, night vision can be used directly in Snapchat. Previously, this was only possible via the Google Camera app. Pixel Camera Services is a system app that was automatically installed in the background. Pixel Camera Services is a system component that brings Pixel Camera features like Night Sight to some 3rd party apps that you’ve granted permission to use your camera.

This component is pre-installed on your device and should be kept up to date to ensure you have the latest image processing updates and other bug fixes. Requirements – Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro running Android 12 with the March security patch. Some features are not available on all devices.

It will be interesting when this function is released for all other app developers and maybe also offered on other Pixel smartphones. The intersection of Pixel 6 users, Snapchat users and users with dark photography ambitions should not be quite as large.

Because this update was unlocked last night, the full feature drop including Android 12L and the other improvements could roll out later today or on Wednesday.
