PlayStation chief Jim Ryan confirmed that Sony plans to make more acquisitions. Just recently, it was rumored that Sony would have a very large acquisition to be announced. Sony acquired Montreal-based developer Haven last month, bringing PS’s first-party studios to more than 18.
Before that, Sony acquired Bungie, Demon’s Souls developer Blue Dot Games, Dead Return developer Housemarque, Nixxes Software, a developer specializing in porting PC games, and UK developer Firesprite (formed by former SIE Liverpool employees).
On a recent PlayStation Podcast episode, SIE President Ryan confirmed that Sony is making further studio acquisitions. We’re in a very good position with PlayStation Studios and have been for the past few years. The critical success and commercial success of the games they make … give us the opportunity to invest heavily in content creation.
We’re growing our studio organically, and we’re growing through acquisitions. We’ve acquired five studios during 2021, we’re in discussions with Bungie, and we have plans for more. This puts us in a virtuous cycle where success begets success.
