iPhone 14 Pro’s wide-angle camera is rumored to have a 21% larger sensor to capture 48-megapixel images

According to unconfirmed technical information shared on Weibo, the iPhone 14 Pro may offer a finer image thanks to a much larger sensor and smaller pixels. An account called “Fishing 8” on Weibo has recently released a slew of technical camera specs for the iPhone 14 Pro. Consistent with numerous rumors about the iPhone 14 Pro’s wide-angle camera over the past year, the post claims that the iPhone 14 Pro will feature a 48-megapixel camera.

Due to the increased pixel count, the iPhone 14 Pro’s wide-angle camera will have smaller pixels, which are said to measure 1.22 microns. This is a 0.68µm reduction compared to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The sensor is believed to be a device from Sony, like those on the iPhone 13 Pro. Despite the pixel size change, the iPhone 14 Pro is said to feature the same Dual Pixel Autofocus (DPAF) system, dubbed “Focus Pixels” by Apple, that has been available on iPhones since 2014’s iPhone 6, and features The same ability to record 16:9 HDR video at up to 60fps.

The device’s sensor size is said to be 1/1.3-inch, a 21.2 percent increase over the 1/1.65-inch sensor on the wide-angle camera on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The increase in sensor size requires a larger lens to capture more light, resulting in a significantly larger rear camera array. The 1/1.3-inch sensor is the same size as Samsung’s 50-megapixel GN1 sensor, which is used on the Google Pixel 6.

Overall, this information suggests that the iPhone 14 Pro will deliver larger, higher-resolution images with finer detail, but at the risk of poorer low-light performance and images that are more susceptible to noise. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously said he thinks the camera quality of the iPhone 14 Pro models will “elevate mobile camera photography to a new level.”

The Weibo accounts that share these technical specs often post detailed camera information, and there is currently no way to verify the authenticity of their posts, so this rumor should be treated with caution. Still, it’s widely believed that the iPhone 14 Pro will feature a larger 48-megapixel wide-angle camera sensor, so the tech specs shared seem plausible and roughly in line with other rumors.
