A few days ago, Microsoft published information on a new known issue that prevents Windows 10 users from upgrading to Windows 11. Microsoft has put an upgrade hurdle for those who are still using Internet Explorer and are ready to embrace Windows 11 without importing their data into Microsoft Edge first.
According to Microsoft, a bug prevented IE users from accessing their browsing data in the Edge browser after installing Windows 11. A few days after announcing that it found the problem, Microsoft has fixed the issue.
Microsoft says the problem is now a thing of the past. The company’s research shows that on systems that have been upgraded to Windows 11, updating Microsoft Edge to version 99.0 can restore lost data in Internet Explorer. Additionally, installing Edge 99.0 or newer will lift the upgrade barrier for Windows 10 users.
To check the version of Microsoft Edge on your computer, open a browser and type edge://settings/help.
With the bug now fixed, IE users are able to update to Windows 11 again with no known issues with the operating system. You can check your system’s “health” in the official documentation, where Microsoft has posted status updates, information on various issues, and possible workarounds:
