Microsoft Edge surpasses Safari: it is now the second most used browser on the desktop

When Edge took over from the much-maligned Internet Explorer, which had long been more of a meme than a browser, the results in terms of popularity weren’t exactly in line with Microsoft’s expectations. But then, with the introduction of the new Chromium-based Edge becoming available to everyone nearly two years ago, things got better.

To the point that today Microsoft Edge, according to the data provided by Statcounter for the month of March, is the second most used browser in the world on the desktop, slightly bypassing Apple’s Safari. Let’s be clear: Google Chrome remains absolutely impregnable, as already emerged from the February data, with its 67.29% market share.

But the news is that in the past month the Edge’s share has surpassed that of Safari, even if it is a fight over the cents. Microsoft’s browser in fact went from 9.61% in February to 9.65% in March, while that of Cupertino fell in the same period from 9.77% to 9.57%.

FIREFOX AND OPERA CLOSE THE TOP 5 (BUT WITH DETACHMENT)

Edge’s run-up to second place has recently materialized, but it was already clearly visible and predictable by analyzing the trends of the last year. Suffice it to say that in January 2021 Safari had totaled 10.38%, while Edge only 7.81%: on the one hand, therefore, the Cupertino option has gradually lost market share, and on the other, Redmond has gained some.

Of course, the fact that on the recent Windows 11 long Edge was “hard to avoid” must have contributed significantly to this climb. But just in late March, Microsoft finally made it easier to change the system default browser.

To close the top 5 browsers in March according to the numbers collected by Statcounter, and therefore have a panoramic view of the war between browsers and the imbalances between the various powers, it is, therefore, worth mentioning the fourth place occupied by Mozilla Firefox with 7.57 % market share, while Opera occupies fifth place with a marked gap from all the others ( 2.81%).
