Google Meet introduces a new feature: automatically log out of the meeting when only one user is online

The importance of online communication and collaboration applications has become increasingly prominent as co-working has become the dominant way of working due to the pandemic. Today, Google announced several improvements that will be available to Meet users in the coming days.

Exit tips for Google Meet meetings

When you are the only person present in the meeting, Meet will show you a prompt to leave the meeting. This will trigger after you have been alone for 5 minutes, after which you will receive a prompt asking you to confirm your intentional presence.

If you don’t click “Continue Waiting” within two minutes, Meet will automatically remove you from the meeting. Google says the reasoning behind the feature is to prevent accidental sharing of audio or video if you forget to leave a meeting.

Integrate “Host Controls”

The second feature that Meet is coming to is the integration of the “Host Controls” menu to make it easier for hosts and co-hosts to manage meetings, rather than jumping through several menu screens to fine-tune the end-user experience.

The auto-exit plan for meetings is available for Android, iOS, and desktop devices, while the “Host Controls” menu is only developed for desktop devices. The former is available for Workspace, traditional G Suite, and personal Google accounts. On the other hand, “Host Controls” are available to all users.

Neither feature requires administrator action, but end users can disable auto-logout if desired; they will be enabled by default. These features will arrive on fast-release domains this month but may take more time on scheduled release domains.
