2022 will be quite an important year for the Apple Watch for several reasons, one of the highlights being the upcoming software update for the device. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said in his latest Power On newsletter that the Apple Watch expects to receive massive software updates, including improvements to activity and health tracking.
While no specific details are provided, it looks like smartwatches will have a lot of good news in several ways. Although watchOS 9 brings new activity improvements are inevitable, apple is also likely to follow this software upgrade to launch a new Apple Watch model, including a newly added rugged model and equipped with a larger battery for the entire series, it is believed that the company is also redesigning the shape of the smartwatch, the news said that this upgrade has been postponed once, originally scheduled to be launched in September 2021.
People familiar with the matter said on multiple occasions last year that the Apple Watch was expected to make a visual update based on the iPhone 12 design. Apple wanted the Apple Watch to use right-angle edges like smartphones, so it abandoned the curved edges already on all models, but in the second half of last year the company said nothing about the change in the product line.
it’s normal for apple to want to offer some design consistency on its products, but on the other hand, the idea was eventually abandoned, seemingly due to the fact that apple ended up with various design issues that made its suppliers face greater challenges in making the necessary parts.
It’s unclear whether the new design will still be able to meet users this year, but if so, given the mix of new looks, major software updates, and massive hardware upgrades, it’s expected that the next-generation Apple Watch will feel like a brand new smartwatch both in terms of hardware and software.
