Windows 11 update introduces big bug: lots of apps crash

Microsoft recently released the May 2022 cumulative update for Windows 11. However, many friends found that many applications did not work properly after installing the patch. After installing the KB5013943 patch, many .NET Framework-based applications crashed, and in some cases, users saw the 0xc0000135 error code.

It is understood that the KB5013943 patch for Win11 was released to the public channel, so many users were even affected. Among .NET Framework-based applications, crashes became commonplace, and applications such as Discord or Microsoft Teams were also affected.

Through the Microsoft Feedback Hub, we can see that the app crash started earlier today after the May 2022 cumulative update was released. The culprit seems to be a compatibility issue between the .NET framework and Windows 11. The .NET Framework is a software development framework for building and running applications on Windows, upon which much Windows software is based.

According to user feedback, many applications are affected, such as the Corsair ICUE application does not work after installing the update, the Corsair service does not start, and users keep getting error notifications.

Some users have also reported crashes in ShareX, KeePass, Microsoft Teams, and other applications (such as the Visual Studio installer), with one user in the Feedback Hub stating that Teams could not be started with the error message “Process exited with code 3221225781 (0xc0000135 )”.

Another user pointed out that the KB5013943 patch crashed the Sound Blaster Command application with the error “Sound Blaster Command failed to start correctly 0xc0000135”. After uninstalling the KB5013943 patch, everything went back to normal.

How to fix these problems? It may be necessary to reinstall the .NET framework. According to user feedback, after reinstalling the .NET framework (2.5 and 4.8), the problem was solved. If you haven’t installed the .NET framework manually and are using the system built-in one, you need to manually disable it and start it again. Specific steps are as follows:

  • Open Windows Search.
  • Search for “Turn Windows features on or off”.
  • Disable and enable all .NET frameworks.
  • After clicking OK, restart the system.

It is not yet clear what caused the problem, but the above operations can indeed solve some problems. Users are also experiencing BSOD errors in some cases, with one Feedback Hub post saying that after installing the KB5013943 patch, Microsoft Studio 2 would fail to launch and generate the error BSOD “APC_Index_Mismatch”.

You must restart your computer, then select “Restart” on the maintenance screen to enter the system. After entering the system, the same error appears on the next shutdown and restart, the problem seems to be intermittent.

If you want to avoid the problem, you can suspend the installation of the KB5013943 patch. Those who have already installed it can also find the patch and uninstall it in the update history option on the Windows update page, waiting for Microsoft’s fix.
