Apple Studio Display webcam fix and firmware update will be available separately

Apple said its update to fix problems with the Studio Display webcam will be released separately from macOS. The bad reviews for Studio Display were mostly criticism of its webcam, and Apple promised an update to improve the issue. The beta version of this update does improve things, but it’s not quite the full fix that users hoped for.

Still, in testing, the beta patch proved to improve skin tones, for example, producing less noisy images. During a FaceTime call, the center stage feature is also less tightly attached to a face.

With Apple now releasing the first release candidate of macOS 12.4 to developers, it also announced that the Studio Display update will come separately.

“Support for Studio Display firmware update 15.5, available as a separate update, refines camera tweaks, including improvements to noise reduction, contrast, and framing,” Apple said.

This means that this fix, and possibly any further fixes, will be downloadable by users themselves, rather than requiring a full macOS update.
