Surface Duo 3? Microsoft files patent for new foldable phone with durable display

Microsoft offers excellent products under its Surface brands, such as the Surface Duo and Surface Book. According to recently published patent details, Microsoft is now working on a next-generation dual-screen phone, dubbed the “Surface Duo 3,” that could be more durable. Recently, a new patent titled “Foldable Display Device” shows a dual-screen foldable device.

The device uses a single folding display. Microsoft calls it a “one-piece back,” and it uses rollable material in the expandable area, which is located near the hinge, which means it’ll be similar in design to the Galaxy Fold.

The new design no longer takes up much space within the body of the foldable phone, which means Microsoft’s next foldable Android phone could be thinner than dual-screen devices, and the “back cover” design is thinner than the Galaxy Fold and Similar foldable phones are more durable.

In the patent filing, Microsoft talks about a foldable device that folds 360 degrees in the folded section, using a back cover and a cover glass layer that covers the entire display, adding a layer between the back cover and the cover glass layer The light-emitting layer, there is also a backplane between the back cover and the light-emitting layer.

As exciting as this may sound, we know that devices that use a single screen or ultra-thin layers of glass and plastic film often suffer from noticeable mechanical creases. A perfect example is the Samsung foldable, which has wrinkles and other visual imperfections in the folded portion of the display and is also prone to cracks and other physical damage.

The patented Surface Duo 3 also uses foldable glass, but its back panel uses a “back panel slot” that allows it to fold without mechanical creasing.

“This embodiment also provides consistent transparency and light transmittance across the entire display, including the folded portion, and mechanically robust components,” Microsoft states in the patent application.

In this way, the presently disclosed display device can be freely rotated through various angles and orientations, while also exhibiting a substantially uniform and smooth surface in various folded and flat orientations, providing users with a pleasing high-quality appearance and experience.”

The patented Surface Duo 3 could be a durable device with most of the benefits of a foldable phone. At the same time, it will also have fewer problems. Of course, this is just a patent and there’s no guarantee it’ll join Microsoft’s Surface lineup, but let’s not forget that the Surface Duo, likewise, originally only existed on paper.

Given the recent organizational changes and Microsoft’s increased focus on the Android platform, it’s certainly possible that such a device will be released. A Surface Duo 3 or more ambitious ideas with this design could land anytime. Microsoft is currently focusing on software for Surface Duo-like devices, while the next generation of dual-screen or foldable phones is still a bit slow.
