Samsung put its 200MP phone camera to the test and printed a gigantic photo

Samsung unveiled its 200MP ISCOCELL HP1 camera sensor back in September last year, but we haven’t seen a device equipped with this massive sensor yet. That could change with an upcoming Motorola phone in July, and Samsung has released a video detailing the sensor’s capabilities.

The aim of the video is to demonstrate the level of detail of the HP1 sensor. While no phone was used to demonstrate the new sensor, we see it hooked up to a test board, an external display and an additional lens that allowed a group of Samsung engineers to capture some detailed cat images.

The final 200MP photo was then printed out on an industrial printer. The final result? A 28 x 22-meter canvas made up of twelve individual 2.3-meter pieces sewn together and hung on a building. The actual photo was of course tweaked and adjusted by the photographers behind the scenes. The key finding is that you can zoom and crop into images without losing detail.

Samsung’s HP1 sensor features an all-new pixel-binning technology called ChamelonCell, which can group up to 16 pixels in different resolutions, ranging from 12.5MP images with a pixel pitch of 2.56μm up to 50MP, depending on your needs -images (1.28μm pixels) or natively with 200 MP (0.64μm pixels).
