MacRumors, Apple’s Wallet app now supports Maryland ID cards and driver’s licenses, the second state after Arizona to receive digital identification. Apple users in the state can use their iPhone or Apple Watch to complete security checks by presenting these digital IDs at certain TSA security checkpoints at airports, including Baltimore Washington International Airport and Reagan National Airport.
The iPhone itself doesn’t carry a picture of the card, it just transmits the information to the receiving device, and the user uses biometrics to confirm the information sent to the device.
However, at this stage, digital ID cards cannot completely replace physical ID cards. The Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles website states that law enforcement does not accept Maryland Mobile IDs, which means you still need to carry a wallet with you to drive a car or fly. Currently, digital IDs are only available at a handful of airports.
In a previous statement, Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said: “We’re excited to bring Arizona’s first driver’s license and state ID card to the wallet today. , and provides Arizona residents an easy, secure and private way to show their ID while traveling by simply tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch. We look forward to working with more states and TSA partners to bring ID in wallets to users across the U.S.”
