Canada’s auto safety agency said Friday that it is investigating the cause of a Tesla car fire in Vancouver. In this accident, the Tesla owner struggled to escape by smashing the window, which attracted the attention of the outside world.
Transport Canada said it had let its contracted collision and defect investigation team “find and secure the vehicle” following the May 20, 2021, fire in a Tesla Model Y in Vancouver. The agency added that Tesla had been notified of the incident and a joint inspection of the vehicle was being arranged to determine the cause of the fire.
A video of the accident posted on the Electrek website shows the owner saying he received a false notification and then saw smoke. In order to get out of the vehicle, he said, he “had to smash the windows… I kicked the windows because everything stopped working. The power didn’t work, the doors didn’t open, the windows couldn’t come down”.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Thursday that the agency was “aware of this and has contacted the manufacturer for information.” Tesla has yet to comment.
