Apple is still selling the Apple Watch Series 3 in its online store, even though the company just announced at WWDC22 that the smartwatch won’t be getting watchOS 9 later this fall.
Apple’s official website shows that the aluminum model of the Apple Watch Series 3 is still sold in Apple channels. Apple is still selling the five-year-old watch to users. Not being able to upgrade to the latest watchOS 9 will definitely be an issue.
For years, Apple Watch Series 3 users have been plagued with running out of storage space to update their watches. Ultimately, Apple made it easier to restore the Apple Watch and then update it.
Apple is rumored to be launching three new watches this year: the Apple Watch Series 8, the Apple Watch SE 2, and the Apple Watch Rugged Edition for extreme sports. With that in mind, it’s likely that Apple will eventually discontinue the $199 Apple Watch Series 3.
The watchOS 9 update will give users more data while exercising, a new meditation app, new watch faces, and more. Here’s the company’s announcement on which devices will support watchOS 9, showing the Apple Watch Series 3 being excluded from that list:
Starting today, Apple Developer Program members can use the developer beta of watchOS 9 at developer.apple.com. A public beta will be available to watchOS users at beta.apple.com next month. watchOS 9 will be available this fall as a free software update for Apple Watch Series 4 or later, paired with iPhone 8 / iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later running iOS 16.
