iOS 16 includes a revamped dictation system with a cleaner interface, smarter punctuation and emoji

iOS 16, which Apple introduced at WWDC 2022 last night, includes an improved dictation system that features a cleaner interface, easier switching between voice input and typing, as well as automatic punctuation and support for emoji insertion. The new dictation experience is entirely program-driven on the device and is designed to make it easier for users to switch between voice input and typing.

Unlike previous versions of iOS, the dictation panel no longer replaces the iOS keyboard. In iOS 16, the keyboard is still open and visible, allowing users to type as needed during dictation.

Dictation now automatically adds punctuation to text and even supports adding emojis. For example, simply say a phrase like “mind blown emoji” to make a “mind blown emoji”. Improvements to automatic punctuation and dictation in iOS 16 are also coming to Siri.
