Apple released iOS 16, iPadOS 16 systems, and has released the first developer preview Beta. Apple re-emphasized HomeKit with iOS 16 this year, bringing a completely redesigned Home app ahead of the upcoming Matter standard release. A key aspect of HomeKit is having the Home Hub, which enables outdoor controls, automation, and more.
Apple has traditionally allowed HomePod, Apple TV and iPad devices to function as Home Hubs. However, with the release of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 this year, the iPad will no longer be supported as a Home Hub.
Apple’s website states that the new Home app and related features in iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 require the Home Hub, including sharing Home and receiving Home notifications. At the same time, Apple also clarified what the Home Hub is, saying: “Only Apple TV and HomePod are supported as Home Hub.”
This means that in order to use HomeKit features on the go, such as control, shared Home access, and set up automation, you’ll need to have a HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV installed on your Home network.
Apple didn’t explain the change, but it should come as no surprise to those trying to rely solely on the iPad as a HomeKit Hub. The idea of the HomeKit Hub is to be always on and always connected to your Home Internet.
In fact, that’s not the case for most iPad users. iPads leave the house like iPhones, they’re not always connected to a power source like an Apple TV or HomePod. For these reasons, using an Apple TV or HomePod as a HomeKit Hub is more reliable than using an iPad.
The most significant HomeKit change in iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 is a brand new Home app designed to be easier to navigate, organize, and control. This includes the new Whole House View, which shows all your rooms and accessories on one page.
