Starfield: Character creation is inspired by the study of DNA fragments

As indicated through Reddit, the Starfield character creation system – Bethesda’s new role-playing game recently presented – seems to be based on the DNA analysis system, namely the gel electrophoresis lines.

As explained by the author of the Reddit post, doing a gel electrophoresis “allows you to separate all the different DNA fragments by size. You put the DNA in a large block of gelatin and run an electric current through it. Because DNA is naturally negatively charged, repelled by the negative electric charge at one end and attracted by the positive electric charge at the other end.

“Because of this, the DNA starts moving through the gelatin, but the longer DNA moves slower because it gets trapped in the pores of the gelatin (large = slow, small = fast). Eventually, gelatin has a gradient of DNA samples separated by size, with the longest DNA at one end and the smallest DNA at the other. ”

“This procedure is used in all kinds of molecular biology experiments, but also for DNA sequencing. So it makes sense that for the genetic aspects of your character … this is the cursor [for selecting physical characteristics]. ”

We don’t know if Starfield’s menus are crafted with scientific accuracy or are just stylistically inspired by that type of DNA sampling procedure. In any case, this is an interesting detail. We also found that Earth could be one of the planets featured in Starfield.
