iOS 16 allows users to delete 29 preinstalled apps

As Apple released the first beta version of iOS 16, some developers have confirmed how many of Apple’s own apps can be removed. Overall, Apple is increasing the number of preinstalled iPhone apps that can be deleted, and the beta version of iOS 16 now allows deletion of up to 29.

During testing, the iOS 16 apps that can be removed may change, and the total may increase or remain the same. Before the official release of iOS 16, the apps that can be deleted are:

  • Books
  • Calculator
  • Calendar
  • Compass
  • Contacts
  • FaceTime
  • Files
  • Find My
  • Fitness
  • Home
  • iTunes Store
  • Mail
  • Maps
  • Mail
  • Measure
  • Music
  • News
  • Notes
  • Podcasts
  • Reminders
  • Shortcuts
  • Stocks
  • Tips
  • Translate
  • TV
  • Voice Memos
  • Watch
  • Weather
  • The iOS 16 Beta version adds four deletable apps, which are:
  • Camera
  • Clock
  • Find My
  • Fitness

Apple has not commented on this and is unlikely to do so until the public release of iOS 16. While the company has previously mentioned removing certain apps, that doesn’t necessarily mean the app’s full functionality is gone.

For example, you can delete the Contacts app, but according to Apple’s support document, “all of your contact information will remain in the Phone app.” Contact information is also “still available via Phone, Messages, Mail, FaceTime,” etc., but to “delete a contact, you must restore the Contacts app to manage it”.

Likewise, even if users delete the FaceTime app, they can still make and receive FaceTime calls through the Contacts or Phone app. Removing the Apple Books, Maps, Music, or Podcasts apps means “they won’t work with CarPlay”. In iOS 16, uninstalling native apps is the same as third-party programs.
