Samsung SDI is considering a new 4680 battery production line to supply Tesla and others

According to the Korea Economic News on June 16, citing industry sources, Samsung SDI is expanding its cylindrical battery production line to produce 4680 batteries for Tesla and other automakers.

Samsung SDI is currently expanding small battery production lines at its Cheonan plant, some of which will be converted into pilot facilities to produce large batteries for electric vehicles, the sources said. Sources expect Samsung to produce battery samples in the first half of next year and start mass production in 2025.

Not long ago, according to Korean media businesskorea, Samsung SDI fixed the diameter of the new battery at 46 mm, but the height is still to be determined, and the company is negotiating this height with several enterprise customers.

It is worth mentioning that recently, LG Energy Solution announced that it plans to invest 582 billion won ($453 million) to build 4680 batteries in new infrastructure at its Ochang plant in South Korea, with a new production line with a capacity of 9GWh.

At the same time, LG New Energy will invest an additional 150 billion won to expand the existing 2170 battery production line, with an estimated new capacity of 4GWh. These new lines will begin commercial production in the second half of next year.
