Valve reveals Deckard patent for standalone VR headset

Valve has filed a new patent for what appears to be a new VR headset, which is different from the company’s Index headset. The tipster said this may be the name the company is building. A standalone headset for “Deckard”.

The patent page shows that the VR headset is a wired headset, but there are indications that Deckard can also work wirelessly, as Steam VR’s test setup lists a Wi-Fi hotspot that can be switched to the wireless mode for Deckard. XR hardware analyst Brad Lynch said the headset’s front and rear units also communicated, noting that Deckard’s dev tools mentioned Lighthouse pairing in a code snippet.

For the average user, the Deckard’s highlight looks to be its more ergonomic design and thinner construction. It’s unclear when Deckard will be released, but patents, leaks, and information found in VR testing all suggest Deckard is nearing completion.
