Google: 5 of our favorite Android widget features

Since the Android 12 update, widgets are very important again for Google. Google’s developers and software designers have demonstrated this with many updates over the past few months. On the one hand, old widgets have been updated and some of the popular Google apps have received completely new widgets.

In a recent post, Google developers share their 5 most popular features of the new Android widgets. Ultimately, one would also like to go into the updates for the widget system, which today makes much more interaction with widgets possible.

Google underlines its efforts for significantly better Android widgets

Google’s contribution included the announcement of an all-new widget for Google Maps that provides live road traffic information in your immediate vicinity. It is provided to users these days.

The new Gmail widget, which sends incoming messages to the archive at the push of a button, is also popular internally. This makes it possible to use Gmail directly from the home screen.

There is also the option of comfortably scrolling through lists and interacting with them in widgets. Apps like Google Keep and Google Translate make use of this in their new widgets.

Last but not least, how flexible widgets adapt to different sizes is optimized. In the meantime, the content has also been adapted. A square widget can have a different structure than a horizontal widget. This gives the user more freedom and a nice look.

I’m a big fan of Google’s widget offensive. However, I still only use two. Once for the overview of my calendar and also for the private to-do list in Todoist.
